| Out of site, out of
mind. While the rest of the country is tied up in the introduction
of government sponsored gambling, it is easy to forget about the
underside of clandestine businesses like illegal slot machine
trafficking.
In Antioch, California local police discovered
casino-style slot machines stashed in a toy store. Officers
believe the slot machines were being sold illegally.
The owner of Tile Setter Toy Store was
arrested. He is 45-years old. The owner was also released moments
later at the scene. The arrest was made right after an undercover
officer purchased a slot machine from him.
Sergeant Don LaDue made it clear that the
selling, possessing, and/or storing of slot machines by unlicensed
persons is illegal.
Police received a tip that the slot machines
were being vended from above the store. As a matter of fact,
detectives discovered almost 30 machines for sale. Detectives are
still not sure of the origin of the slot machines; however, they are
almost certain they are from outside of California.
Though the dealer did not have a large number
of slot machines, he did have a variety being sold at different
prices. Smaller machines were going for roughly $500 and
three-wheel style, arm-pull machines were going for $1,200.
The investigation will continue. Police
suspect at least one other employee was involved. The case will be
brought to the District Attorney’s office on possible "sale of slot
machines" charges.
