Various factions have been trying for years to legalize slot
machines in Ohio. Certain groups are getting close to their goal
but a few obstacles still stand. Recently, statewide advertisements
have appeared on television to support the slot machine Ohio cause.
Interestingly enough, when locals see the commercials, odds are they
will not figure out that they are watching a slot machines support
ad.
This is not a result of a
lack of observation. The commercials do not mention anything about
slot machines. The commercials, wisely, only mention the proposed
benefits of slots revenues. “Learn and Earn” is pushing to bring in
slot machines to create new scholarship programs for Ohio’s high
school students. Supporters of the “Learn and Earn” program
estimate that $200 million annually would support economic
development and $700 million will fund scholarship programs each
year.
In order to allow opponents
to look past their pre-decided notions of slot machines and
expanding gambling in the state, the commercials speak of the
communal good. The slot machines would operate at race tracks and
downtown casinos. But, there are hurdles yet to be leaped. The
slot machine proposal is not yet on the coming November
ballot. Signatures are still being collected across the state to
get both the “Learn and Earn” program and a second slots issue on
the ballot.
