Tomorrow, May 22, 2006, is a very important day for slot machines in
South Florida. The Department of Business Professional Regulation’s
Division of Pari-Mutuel Wagering will review the currently pending
regulations on slot machines. A new set of regulations could go
into affect as early as June 25, 2006, that is if the proposed
policies go unchallenged.
The President of Rahn &
Associates, Eric Rahn, sheds light on tomorrow’s hearing, “On March
8th, 2005 the voters of Broward County passed a
referendum to allow slot machines at four pari-mutuels in Broward
County. This hearing will put forth the proposed rules and
regulations of how the industry will be regulated by the State of
Florida.” Rahn & Associates is a casino operational consulting
firm.
Most of the Broward County's approved pari-mutuel sites have gone
public with their multimillion dollar plans to construct
accommodations for thousands of new slot machines. Thousands of new
jobs will need to be filled in order to operate the new industry.
The Jai Li, dog racing, and horse racing industry can all anticipate
prosperity and continued employment should the slot machine
referendum pass.
Three of the four pari-mutuels are almost ready to open doors on
their new slot machine facilities. This August will see the opening
of Gulf Stream Park and Mardi Gras (Hollywood Greyhound). Dania Jai
Li and Pompano Park are not expected to be ready until early 2007.
“These are exciting times
for the gaming and pari-mutuel industries in South Florida,” says
Rahn as he discusses his expectations, “hopefully this will be a
successful model for the rest of the State of Florida to follow.”
