| In keeping with the
ideals of the Republic, the Johnston, Rhode Island town council is
fighting to put the casino issues in the hands of voters. Tuesday’s
meeting of the town council resulted in a 4-1 vote in favor of
requesting the General Assembly allow residents to vote on whether
or not a casino will be brought into their community.
The resolution is being forced by business man
Donald Trump’s casino venture in Rhode Island. The objective is to
draft a bill that would put the casino question on the November
ballot. As of Tuesday, the resolution has been passed.
This resolution is not the only legal casino
proposal being considered in Rhode Island. Some lawmakers are
seeking an amendment to the state constitution that would permit the
Narragansett Indians to construct a casino in West Warwick. Famed
casino operator Harrah’s is backing this venture.
The Johnston resolution, says Council
President Robert V. Russo, will be an alternative to the West
Warwick proposal. Having two proposals will add some much need
competition to the process. Russo say, “Let the people vote on it.”
Councilman Ernest F. Pitochelli cast the only
vote against the resolution. He was perturbed by the late
notification of council members on Friday evening. Pitochelli is in
strong opposition of casinos in Rhode Island.
Trump Entertainment has another legal
proposition in the works. They have proposed an additional ballot
question asking whether competition should be allowed among casinos
should casinos be allowed by voters.
